In 2013, as the Supreme Court heard arguments on California’s Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act, I wrote a series of pieces on government’s role in promoting families. I argued that there is a compelling state interest in promoting stable families, that this interest does not justify refusing to recognize same-sex marriage, and that there is much more that government can and should do to promote family.
